Widgee Turf first up in the Schweppes Handicap

Dec 02, 2017

Patrick Payne-trained Widgee Turf scored an impressive win in the Schweppes Handicap (1300) at Sandown on Saturday. He was first up from a spell and it was his most dominating win to date although he has been extremely consistent.

Widgee Turf is a gelding born in 2013 by Turffontein out of Greyhound and was purchased for just $4,500 as a foal at the 2014 Inglis Great Southern Sale. The Turffontein youngster was bred and sold by Little Plains Stud owner Barb Ivill and caught the eye of his connections pre-sale. He is the final foal of Greyhound (Kala Dancer) who has also foaled minor winners by Estambul and Legion.

The current race record for Widgee Turf is 4 wins and 3 seconds from 11 starts with prizemoney of $316,800.00 which includes Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold bonuses of $96,400.

At his first start outside of 3yo grade Widgee Turf was dominant, he handled the heavy ground and with some luck he will continue to progress through the ratings.

Congratulations to Widgee Turf’s connections Gordon & Marlene McIntosh, to Billy Egan for his winning ride and to all the staff at Patrick Payne Racing.
